Here’s the list of categories for the 2017 Lone Star Awards!

2017 LONE STAR AWARDS CATEGORIES LIST
1. Newspaper –
a. Print Journalist of the Year: must submit three (3) samples of candidate’s writing – one of which is entered in another category
b. News or Feature Story: coverage of breaking or developing news or personality profile, coverage of lifestyle, humorous report
c. Investigative Reporting: entries should show enterprise, initiative and in-depth research. May include report by a single reporter or a team. One story or a series.
d. Business Story: coverage of business or financial matters
e. General Commentary/Criticism: general column written by a single writer. May have a serious, feature or humorous angle.
f. Sports Story: may include personality profile, coverage of lifestyle, or humorous report by one or more reporters. One story or a series.

2. Photography –
a. News, Sports or Feature Photo: color or black and white

3. TV –
a. Journalist of the Year: must submit three (3) samples of candidate’s work – one of which is entered in another category
b. Photojournalist of the Year: must submit three (3) samples of candidate’s work – one of which is entered in another category.
c. Breaking News: single-day coverage of breaking or developing news produced under deadline pressure. One to three spots on a single event constitute an entry.
d. Hard News Feature: in-depth coverage of a hard news event, other than a breaking story. May include business or medical news.
e. Soft News Feature: may include personality profile, coverage of lifestyle or humorous report.
f. Investigative/Series: entries should show enterprise, initiative and in-depth research. May include report by a single reporter or a team. One story or a series.
g. Politics/Government: single story or a series
h. Weathercast: complete regularly scheduled weathercast broadcast on one of the days specified as a 2011 Associated Press Contest Day for “Best Newscast.”
i. Consumer News: stories on consumer issues
j. Documentary/Public Affairs: self-contained program scheduled outside regular news programming. Material must be original to the broadcast and not a repeat of reports aired elsewhere. May not exceed 30 minutes.
k. Sports Feature: may include personality profile, coverage of lifestyle or humorous report by one or more reporters. May include one program or a series.
l. Feature Photography: photo coverage of news or sports topic that is not of a breaking or developing nature
m. Editing: editing of a single story that exemplifies good pacing and continuity
n. TV Evening News Broadcast: Locally originated and regularly scheduled newscast broadcast between noon and midnight Judging will be based on overall content and how well the morning show serves the community.
o. TV Morning News Broadcast: Locally originated and regularly scheduled newscast broadcast between 4 a.m. and noon. Judging will be based on overall content and how well the morning show serves the community.

4. Radio
a. Journalist of the Year: must submit three (3) sample of candidate’s work – one of which is entered in another category
b. Hard News Feature: in-depth coverage of a hard news event, other than a breaking story. May include consumer, business or medical news.
c. Soft News Feature: may include personality profile, coverage of lifestyle or humorous report.
d. Politics/Government: one story or a series
e. Public Affairs: a story or program, not to exceed 30 minutes, examining a community issue
f. Series: in-depth stories broadcast over two or more days
g. Use of Sound: best use of audio resources in a radio story
h. Talk Show: locally-produced talk show. Submit a segment not to exceed 30 minutes.

5. Magazines
a. Article: one story by one or more reporters
b. Column: column by author whose work appears regularly in the publication
c. Layout: overall appearance of one issue of a publication

6. Public Relations
a. Communicator of the Year: must submit three (3) samples of candidate’s work – one of which is entered in another category
b. News Release: single news release on a hard or soft news event, other than a breaking story
c. Feature Article: single PR article printed or online to be judged on the quality of writing
d. Annual Report: one copy of an annual report from an organization to be judged on quality of writing, content and presentation
e. Corporate Video: one copy of a video for a company to be judged on quality of writing, content, direction, informativeness, entertainment (if applicable) and production values.
f. PR Publication: Printed or online issue of an in-house or external publication to be judged on quality of writing, content and presentation. Each issue must be a separate entry.

7. Internet-based
a. News Feature Story: must have appeared online and may include personality profile, coverage of lifestyle, sports or humorous report. Entries consist of a single piece, series or a package.
b. Hard News Article: a single online article on a hard news event, other than breaking news.
c. Collaborative News Reporting: done in collaboration with another medium. May include spot or feature stories, as single piece, series or package.
d. Opinion: must have appeared online and may include criticism, editorials or perspective pieces. Entries consist of a single piece, series or package.

8. Student
a. Student Print News or Feature Story: single story by one reporter or a team
b. Student Print Sports Story: single story by one reporter or a team
c. Best Student Newspaper: three (3) issues on different dates should be accompanied by a supporting letter
d. Student Print News, Sports or Feature Photography: color or black and white
e. Student TV & Radio News or Feature Story: single story by one reporter or a team
f. Student TV or Radio Sports Story: single story by one reporter or a team
